Time Out Beirut

Just Opened… Bar Tartine

The venue
A brand new concept from the people behind Zaatar w Zeit (or perhaps borrowed from those already running a similar one of the same name in San Francisco), Bar Tartine and its adjoining Tartine Bakery form part of the new village-like courtyard of restaurants in Mar Mikhael.

The mood
Sharing a sunny, European-style courtyard with its new neighbours, Bar Tartine occupies a traditional old Lebanese house, renovated in a stylishly simple fashion just ripe for franchising. Try and grab a table on the terrace, where the mood is a little more sophisticated. Be sure to get there early, though – terrace seating is first come first served.

The food
Though Bar Tartine offers a more casual menu than its neighbours, the options are just as innovative. With soups (like the Camembert onion), sandwiches (check out the seared wasabi tuna) and gourmet salads, Bar Tartine makes an appealing, reliable new lunch choice (not to mention a less expensive way to enjoy the atmosphere of the courtyard). At dinner, TOB enjoyed the white fish rata – a fresh sea bass fillet grilled in a lemon zest marinade – as well as the Mean and Lean burger (served in a toasted brioche bun with creamy Camembert) and the High Steak (an Australian grain-fed filet served with porto and wine sauce).

The drinks
Quite rightly considering its name, Bar Tartine has a bar serving wine (by the glass only), spirits and beers. For more fanciful cocktails, head upstairs to Sud’s bar instead.
